The 26S proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered structure composed of two complexes: a 20S core and a 19S regulator.
The 20S core consists of four rings of 28 non-identical subunits—two rings of seven alpha subunits and two rings of seven beta subunits.
The 19S regulator includes a base (six ATPase and two non-ATPase subunits) and a lid (up to ten non-ATPase subunits).
Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and cleave peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal pathway.
The immunoproteasome variant processes class I MHC peptides.
This gene encodes a non-ATPase subunit of the 19S regulator base.
