Target Information
AHR (Ah Receptor) belongs to a family of proteins including its dimerization partner ARNT (HIF-1 Beta) and Drosophila proteins PER and SIM.
AHR contains an N-terminal PAS domain (~200 amino acids) and is found in various tissues. It binds specific DNA enhancer sequences to initiate transcription of cytochrome P-450 (CYPIA1).
AHR is a ligand-activated transcription factor regulating biological responses to planar aromatic hydrocarbons, influencing xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes such as cytochrome P450.
Known ligands include polycyclic and halogenated aromatic compounds (e.g., TCDD).
In non-ligand activated cells, AHR complexes with HSP90 in the cytoplasm; upon ligand binding, it transforms to a nuclear DNA-binding form via heterodimerization with ARNT.
Diseases associated with AHR include eosinophilic fasciitis and seborrheic dermatitis.
