Target Information
Excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) is a membrane-bound protein belonging to the solute transporter family. It is the principal transporter responsible for clearing the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate from the extracellular space at synapses in the central nervous system. Proper glutamate clearance is essential for normal synaptic activation and prevention of neuronal damage caused by excessive stimulation of glutamate receptors. Mutations or decreased expression of EAAT2 are associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene have been identified.
