Target Information

ATRX encodes a protein containing an ATPase/helicase domain, belonging to the SWI/SNF family of chromatin remodeling proteins. Mutations in this gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) and alpha-thalassemia (ATRX) syndrome. These mutations can alter DNA methylation patterns, linking chromatin remodeling, DNA methylation, and gene expression in development. The protein undergoes cell cycle–dependent phosphorylation, regulating nuclear matrix and chromatin association, and is involved in gene regulation during interphase and chromosomal segregation in mitosis. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
