Target Information

CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on many stem cell populations. It serves as a stem cell marker with reversible expression on human hematopoietic stem cells. CD34 may function as a surface receptor involved in receptor-mediated endocytosis and regulation of adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors.

It is thought to mediate attachment of stem cells to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells, possibly acting as a scaffold for lineage-specific glycans. CD34 may also present carbohydrate ligands to selectins. Its intracellular domain can be phosphorylated by protein kinase C, suggesting a role in signal transduction.
Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
