Target Information
The thymus gland produces several hormones or hormone-like substances derived from a polypeptide precursor known as prothymosin-alpha.
Thymosin-alpha-1, a peptide containing 28 amino acids, was originally isolated from calf thymosin fraction 5 and shown to restore immune function in various test systems.
It was later isolated from human thymosin with the same amino acid sequence as bovine thymosin-alpha-1.
In 2003, Jiang et al. identified a pathway regulating mitochondria-initiated caspase activity, where PHAP promoted caspase-9 activation, while prothymosin-alpha-1 negatively regulated it by inhibiting apoptosome formation.
