Target Information
The SMAD1 protein belongs to the SMAD family, homologous to Drosophila “mothers against decapentaplegic” (Mad) and C. elegans Sma genes. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways. SMAD1 mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signals involved in cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand binding, SMAD1 is phosphorylated and activated by BMP receptor kinase, forming a complex with SMAD4 for transcriptional regulation. It is targeted by E3 ubiquitin ligases such as SMURF1 and SMURF2 for ubiquitination and degradation. Alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been reported.
