Target Information
The SMAD1 protein belongs to the SMAD family, homologous to Drosophila “mothers against decapentaplegic” (Mad) and C. elegans Sma genes. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators in multiple signaling pathways. SMAD1 mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signals involved in cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand binding, SMAD1 is phosphorylated by BMP receptor kinase and forms a complex with SMAD4 to regulate transcription. It is targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) for ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. Alternative splicing variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
