Target Information

The SMAD1 protein belongs to the SMAD family, which shares homology with the Drosophila gene mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and C. elegans gene Sma. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways. SMAD1 mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling, influencing processes such as cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand binding, SMAD1 is phosphorylated and forms a complex with SMAD4 to regulate transcription. It is also targeted for ubiquitination and degradation by E3 ligases such as SMURF1 and SMURF2. Alternative splicing variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
