Target Information
The MCM4 gene encodes a conserved mini-chromosome maintenance protein essential for eukaryotic DNA replication initiation. The MCM complex (MCM2, 4, 6, 7) forms part of the pre-replication complex and exhibits DNA helicase activity, aiding in replication fork formation and DNA unwinding. Phosphorylation by CDC2 kinase reduces helicase activity and chromatin binding. The gene is located on chromosome 8 adjacent to PRKDC/DNA-PK, involved in DNA double-strand break repair. Alternative splicing variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
