Somatostatin은 외분비 및 내분비 단백질 분비, 신경전달 및 신경 조절, 세포 증식 조절에 관여하는 다기능 단백질입니다. 이러한 기능은 GPCR 단백질 패밀리에 속하는 소마토스타틴 수용체를 통해 수행됩니다. 현재까지 6가지 소마토스타틴 수용체가 알려져 있으며, 그중 SSTR5(364 아미노산 길이)는 뇌의 뇌하수체 및 시상하부에 주로 발현되는 수용체 아형입니다. SSTR5는 7개의 막관통 영역을 가지며, SSTR1과 이합체를 형성할 수 있습니다. SSTR5는 ACTH 분비 조절에서 SSTR2의 기능을 보완하는 것으로 알려져 있으며, SSTR5 유전자 다형성은 말단비대증 환자에서 보고되었습니다.
