Target Information
Somatostatin is a multifunctional protein involved in exocrine and endocrine secretion, neurotransmission, neuronal modulation, and regulation of cell proliferation. These functions are mediated through GPCR family members known as somatostatin receptors. Six receptor classes have been identified, among which SSTR5 (364 amino acids) is predominantly expressed in the pituitary and hypothalamus. SSTR5 contains seven transmembrane regions, forms homodimers and heterodimers (notably with SSTR1), and may complement SSTR2 in regulating ACTH secretion. Polymorphisms in the SSTR5 gene have been observed in patients with acromegaly.
