Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), which is further converted to water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
Several classes of SOD have been identified:
- SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): Intracellular enzyme found in all eukaryotes, homodimeric 32 kDa form.
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme (~80 kDa tetramer), located in the mitochondrial matrix.
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular, heparin-binding multimer, expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
- SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase, delivers Cu to Cu/Zn-SOD and may activate it through direct Cu insertion.
