Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a polypeptide hormone primarily active in the nervous system, promoting neurotransmitter synthesis and neurite outgrowth in certain neuronal populations. It functions as a potent survival factor for neurons and oligodendrocytes and may help reduce tissue destruction during inflammatory attacks.
A mutation in this gene causing aberrant splicing leads to ciliary neurotrophic factor deficiency, though not directly linked to neurologic disease.
A read-through transcript variant composed of ZFP91 and CNTF sequences has been identified and is considered non-coding. Similar read-through transcription has been observed in mouse.
