Target Information
Kallikreins are a subgroup of serine proteases with diverse physiological functions. Many kallikreins are implicated in carcinogenesis and have potential as cancer and disease biomarkers. This gene is one of fifteen kallikrein subfamily members located on chromosome 19. The encoded enzyme participates in proteolysis of intercellular cohesive structures preceding desquamation (shedding of the outermost epidermal layer). Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
