Target Information

CD81 (TAPA-1, target of anti-proliferative antibody-1) is a member of the tetraspanin family expressed on most nucleated cells, especially germinal center B cells. It forms complexes with other tetraspanins, integrins, coreceptors, and MHC molecules, influencing cell adhesion, activation, proliferation, and differentiation of B and T cells.

In muscle tissue, CD81 promotes cell fusion and myotube maintenance. It also functions as a receptor for the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Like other tetraspanins (CD9, CD37, CD53, CD63, CD82), CD81 is a cell-surface glycoprotein characterized by four hydrophobic domains and involved in signal transduction regulating cell development and motility.

CD81 associates with CD19, CD21, Leu 13, and integrins on the cell membrane and may play a role in tumor suppression. Antibodies to CD81 exhibit anti-proliferative effects on certain lymphoid cell lines, particularly large cell lymphomas.
