Target Information
Tuberculosis is a chronic bacterial infection and remains one of the leading causes of death among young adults worldwide.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis enters the alveoli by airborne transmission and is engulfed by alveolar macrophages but resists destruction.
It is suspected that the bacterium survives by preventing the fusion of the phagosome and lysosome.
As it accumulates, it forms a tubercle, spreads to lymph nodes, and can become systemic.
Although treatments exist, new multidrug-resistant strains pose a considerable public health threat.
