Target Information
The Calpain family of proteins are calcium-regulated thiol proteases with broad endopeptidase activity. Calpain small subunit 2 (CSS2 or CAPNS2) is a calcium-dependent protease ubiquitously expressed in the cytoplasm. It forms a heterodimer with a large subunit, catalyzing proteolysis of proteins involved in cytoskeletal remodeling and signal transduction. CSS2 also acts as a chaperone, ensuring proper folding of the large subunit. When calcium binds, CSS2 dissociates from the complex, activating the large subunit and allowing translocation to the cell membrane. Defects in the CSS2 gene can lead to abnormal calpain activity and impaired fetal development, indicating its essential role in normal growth.
