Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing tissues (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 distinct CKs are known, divided into two classes:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and pairs with keratin 5. It distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and serves as a marker for squamous cell carcinomas. It is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratin families are expressed in all epithelial cells.
