Target Information

Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed proteins that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione.
There are several isoforms differing in primary structure and localization:

• GPx1 (cGPx): Classical cytosolic/mitochondrial, selenium-dependent enzyme and first discovered GPx family member.
• GPx2 (GI-GPx): Intracellular enzyme expressed only at the epithelium of the gastrointestinal tract.
• GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma GPx mainly expressed by the kidney and released into blood circulation.
• GPx4 (PH-GPx): Expressed in most tissues; reduces hydroperoxides integrated in membranes, hydroperoxy lipids in LDL, or thymine.

All mammalian GPx family members, except Cys-containing GPx3 and epididymis-specific secretory GPx (GPx5), possess selenocysteine at the active site.
