Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, affecting sequence homology recognition. The MRPL11 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with three transcript variants producing different isoforms. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 5q and 12q.
