Mitofusin 2는 미토콘드리아 융합에 관여하는 막 단백질로, 미토콘드리아 네트워크의 유지 및 기능에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 또한 혈관 평활근 세포 증식 조절에 관여하며, 비만의 병태생리에 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다.
이 유전자의 돌연변이는 Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A2 및 hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy VI와 같은 말초 신경계 질환을 유발합니다. 또한 조기 발병 뇌졸중과의 연관성도 보고되었습니다.
