Target Information
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze numerous reactions involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. CYP2D6 localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and metabolizes approximately 20% of commonly prescribed drugs, including debrisoquine, sparteine, propafenone, and amitryptiline. The gene is highly polymorphic, with certain alleles leading to a poor metabolizer phenotype. It is located on chromosome 22q13.1 near two cytochrome P450 pseudogenes. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
