Target Information
Influenza viruses consist of three types (A, B, and C), which make up three of the five genera in the Orthomyxoviridae family. Commonly known as the flu, influenza strains can infect both birds and mammals.
Influenza viruses form roughly spherical particles with a viral envelope containing two main types of glycoproteins (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase), surrounding the central core of the viral RNA genome and associated proteins.
The influenza virus genome is segmented into seven to eight fragments of negative-sense RNA, each encoding different viral proteins. Influenza A virus contains eight single-stranded, negative-sense RNAs. Each RNA associates with viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase consisting of PA, PB1, and PB2 proteins.
The PA protein plays a key role in the “cap-snatching” mechanism via its endonuclease activity, essential for cRNA-dependent viral RNA synthesis.
