Target Information

G protein-coupled inwardly rectifying potassium channels (Kir3.1 through Kir3.4) are associated with various neurotransmitter receptors in the brain and are highly expressed in the olfactory bulb, hippocampus, neocortex, dentate gyrus, cerebellar cortex, and thalamus.
Also known as GIRK, Kir3 potassium channels localize to soma, dendrites, and axons of neurons.
Liberated Gβγ subunits from G protein heterotrimers regulate Kir3 channel activity.

  • Gβ3- and Gβ4-containing dimers activate Kir3 channels and increase K⁺ current.
  • Gβ5-containing dimers inhibit Kir3 K⁺ current.
    Kir3 activity is inhibited by tyrosine phosphorylation. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor activates receptor tyrosine kinase B, which phosphorylates Kir3 tyrosine residues, inactivating the channels.
