Target Information
In eukaryotes, phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins on serine and threonine residues regulate numerous cellular functions such as division, homeostasis, and apoptosis. Protein phosphatases are key enzymes in this process. The protein phosphatase (PP) holoenzyme typically consists of a regulatory, variable, and catalytic subunit. Four major families of catalytic subunits are known: PP1, PP2A, PP2B (calcineurin), and PP2C. The PP2A family includes subfamily members PP2A alpha and PP2A beta. Another catalytic subunit, PPX (PP4), is considered part of a novel PP family.
