Target Information
IL-6 encodes a cytokine involved in inflammation and B cell maturation. The protein acts as an endogenous pyrogen, inducing fever in autoimmune or infectious conditions. It is primarily expressed at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, secreted into serum, and triggers inflammatory transcriptional responses via the interleukin 6 receptor, alpha.
This gene is implicated in various inflammation-associated diseases, including diabetes mellitus susceptibility and systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated IL-6 levels are observed in viral infections such as COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). Diseases associated with IL6 include Kaposi Sarcoma and Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.
