Target Information
In eukaryotes, phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins on serine and threonine residues regulate diverse cellular processes such as division, homeostasis, and apoptosis. Protein phosphatases are key enzymes in this regulation. The protein phosphatase (PP) holoenzyme is typically a trimeric complex consisting of regulatory, variable, and catalytic subunits. Four major families of catalytic subunits have been identified: PP1, PP2A, PP2B (calcineurin), and PP2C. The PP2A family includes PP2A alpha and PP2A beta subunits. Another related phosphatase, PPX (also known as PP4), is considered part of a novel PP family.
