Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the transient receptor potential (TRP) protein family, a diverse group of ion channel proteins. TRPM5 plays a critical role in taste transduction and functions as a calcium-activated, non-selective cation channel permeable to Na⁺, K⁺, and Cs⁺, but not Ca²⁺. It is activated by low intracellular Ca²⁺ concentrations and inhibited by higher levels. The channel is temperature-sensitive, showing increased inward currents between 15–35°C. The gene is located within the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome critical region-1 on chromosome 11p15.5 and is imprinted, with expression from the paternal allele.
