Target Information
Clic5 encodes a protein required for normal hearing and formation of stereocilia in the inner ear. It can insert into membranes and form ion channels that may transport chloride ions. Clic5 plays a role in transepithelial ion absorption and secretion, and is essential for maintaining proper glomerular endothelial cell and podocyte architecture. The Clic5 gene belongs to the chloride intracellular channel (CLIC) family and associates with actin-based cytoskeletal structures. It is involved in hair cell stereocilia formation, myoblast proliferation, and glomerular maintenance. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist.
Diseases associated with CLIC5 include Deafness, Autosomal Recessive 103, and Autosomal Recessive Non-Syndromic Sensorineural Deafness Type Dfnb.
