Target Information

Glutamate receptors mediate most excitatory neurotransmission in the brain and play important roles in neural plasticity, development, and neurodegeneration. Ionotropic glutamate receptors include NMDA and kainate/AMPA receptors, both containing glutamate-gated, cation-specific ion channels. Kainate/AMPA receptors co-localize with NMDA receptors in many synapses and consist of seven subunits (GluR-1 to -7).
Kainate/AMPA receptors mainly mediate fast excitatory neurotransmission, whereas NMDA receptors show slower Ca²⁺ kinetics and higher Ca²⁺ permeability. NMDA receptors comprise five subunits: epsilon 1–4 and one zeta subunit. The zeta subunit is widely expressed in the brainstem, while epsilon subunits have more limited distribution.
