MELK (Maternal Embryonic Leucine Zipper Kinase)는 AMPK 계열에 속하는 세린/트레오닌 키나아제로, 세포 주기 조절과 관련이 있습니다. MELK는 암에서 과발현되는 것으로 알려져 있으며, 암 치료제의 잠재적 타깃으로 연구되고 있습니다.
이 단백질은 다양한 기질을 인산화하며, BCL2L14, CDC25B, MAP3K5/ASK1, ZNF622 등을 포함합니다.
MELK는 세포자멸사를 유도하는 MAP3K5/ASK1의 인산화를 통해 세포사멸을 활성화하며, CDC25B의 인산화를 통해 세포 분열 중 중심체 및 방추극으로의 이동을 조절합니다. 또한, 신경 전구세포의 증식에 필수적이며, BCL2L14 억제를 통해 유방암 발생에 영향을 줄 수 있습니다.
