This gene encodes a UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, an enzyme involved in the glucuronidation pathway that transforms small lipophilic molecules such as steroids, bilirubin, hormones, and drugs into water-soluble metabolites.
It is part of a complex locus encoding several UDP-glucuronosyltransferases, with multiple alternate first exons and common exons resulting in various isoforms.
The preferred substrate of this enzyme is bilirubin, and mutations in this gene are associated with Crigler-Najjar syndromes types I and II and Gilbert syndrome.
