Target Information
P-cadherin (Cadherin-3) is a Type 1 cadherin protein belonging to the cadherin superfamily. These calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion glycoproteins have five extracellular cadherin repeats and an intracellular domain that binds p120-catenin and beta-catenin.
P-cadherin plays roles in development, wound healing, cell signaling, growth, and differentiation. It is expressed in human fetal tissues and adult structures such as the epidermal basal layer, breast, prostate, ovary, cervix, hair follicle, and corneal endothelium.
Expression is also found in embryonic stem cells and stem cells of the mammary gland and hair follicle. Overexpression of P-cadherin correlates with poor prognosis in several carcinomas, including breast, prostate, ovary, colon, and stomach. Mutations in CDH3 are linked to congenital hypotrichosis with juvenile macular dystrophy.
