Target Information
Periostin (PN), also known as osteoblast-specific factor 2 (OSF-2), is a disulfide-linked, secreted protein that binds heparin and functions as a ligand for αVβ3 and αVβ5 integrins.
In preosteoblasts, Periostin acts as a cell adhesion molecule, promoting osteoblast recruitment, spreading, and attachment. It is mainly expressed in the lower gastrointestinal tract, aorta, stomach, placenta, uterus, and breast tissues, and is upregulated in epithelial ovarian tumors and overexpressed in breast cancer.
Expression of Periostin is induced by bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1).
Periostin contains a signal sequence, a cysteine-rich domain, four repeated fasciclin-like domains, and a C-terminal domain.
