Target Information
In response to environmental stress, cells increase expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs). One class, the small heat shock proteins (15–>30 kDa), includes diverse forms across species. Elevated HSP expression has been linked to neoplasia, particularly estrogen-induced proteins in breast cancer cells. Hsp27 shows rapid phosphorylation in response to mitogens and tumor promoters. Expression of a 24 kDa estrogen-induced protein correlates with steroid hormone receptor activity and is highly expressed in breast carcinoma. Similar correlations have been noted in endometrial adenocarcinomas. Regulation of human Hsp27 by estrogens and heat shock mirrors ecdysteroid and heat shock activation of Drosophila Hsp20 genes.
