Target Information
This gene encodes a tumor suppressor protein that selectively induces apoptosis in cancer cells through intracellular and extracellular mechanisms.
- Intracellular mechanism: Inhibits pro-survival pathways and activates Fas-mediated apoptosis.
- Extracellular mechanism: Binds secreted protein to GRP78 on the cell surface, activating the extrinsic apoptotic pathway.
The gene is located on the unstable human chromosomal region 12q21 and is often deleted or mutated in various tumors. It also plays a role in age-related disease progression.
