Target Information
The KIRREL2 gene encodes a type I transmembrane protein, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell adhesion molecules. The protein localizes to adherens junctions in pancreatic beta cells and regulates insulin secretion. Autoantibodies against this protein have been detected in serum from patients with type 1 diabetes. It may also play a role in glomerular development, with decreased expression observed in glomerular diseases. This gene and the opposite-strand gene nephrin are regulated by a bidirectional promoter.
