Target Information
Escherichia coli (E. coli) are Gram-negative enteric bacteria that inhabit the human gut. Their presence in nature indicates human fecal pollution.
E. coli can cause diseases such as urinary tract infections and neonatal meningitis.
Certain enterotoxigenic strains may lead to life-threatening intestinal diseases.
E. coli are immunologically distinguished by serotyping based on three antigen types:
- O antigen: terminal sugars on the cell surface lipopolysaccharide
- K antigen: capsular antigens
- H antigen: flagellar antigens
