Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein essential for epithelial cell layer formation and maintenance. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor the E-cadherin complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with complexes containing adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, participating in signaling pathways involving tyrosine kinases, phosphatases, and Wnt/Wingless signaling.
This protein plays a crucial role in morphogenesis and is expressed in various hair follicle and epithelial cell types. Dysregulation of beta-catenin has been implicated in diseases such as pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, and other solid tumors. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting expression of genes like cyclin D and c-myc that drive cell proliferation, contributing to tumorigenesis.
