Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated across species. Adipocytes secrete various physiologically important proteins, including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, resistin, and perilipin.
Perilipin is an intracellular neutral lipid droplet protein regulated hormonally and localized to the surface of lipid droplets. Upon lipolytic stimulation, perilipin is phosphorylated by protein kinase A, subsequently inhibiting hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), which mediates triacylglycerol hydrolysis.
Perilipin expression is restricted to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells, with two known isoforms (Perilipin A and B) arising from differential splicing of a single gene.
