Target Information
The Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme-catalytic polypeptide-like (APOBEC) 3 family is a group of cytidine deaminases that act on monomeric nucleoside and nucleotide substrates. APOBEC3 plays a crucial role in cellular defense against retroviral infection. Isoforms such as APOBEC3G and APOBEC3F can be incorporated into HIV-1 virions, inducing hypermutation in viral DNA and destabilizing the viral genome. The HIV-1 Vif protein counteracts this defense mechanism by inducing ubiquitination and degradation of APOBEC3G. A single amino acid substitution (D128K) can block APOBEC3G depletion without affecting its antiviral activity.
