Target Information
This gene belongs to the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family. It encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein localized to plasma and mitochondrial membranes, mediating cellular uptake of nucleosides. The transporter is sensitive to inhibition by nitrobenzylthioinosine. Nucleoside transporters are essential for nucleotide synthesis in cells lacking de novo pathways and for uptake of cytotoxic nucleosides used in cancer and viral therapies. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
