Target Information
The inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family of proteins regulates programmed cell death triggered by various stimuli. All IAPs contain at least one baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) motif essential for their anti-apoptotic activity. A mitochondrial serine protease, Omi/HtrA2, is released upon induction of apoptosis and binds to IAP. The mature Omi protein includes a conserved IAP-binding motif (AVPS) at its N terminus. Overexpression of Omi in the cytoplasm induces apoptosis, suggesting its role in the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.
