Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and requires inflammasome activation for cleavage into the active 17 kDa protein. IL-1 beta lacks a signal peptide for the classical ER/Golgi pathway and is secreted via an alternate mechanism. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors and is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1 beta plays a key role in innate host defense and is associated with chronic inflammatory conditions.
