Norovirus is a single-stranded, non-enveloped RNA virus belonging to the Caliciviridae family. It is a major cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. Transmission occurs via contaminated food, water, or person-to-person contact. Most human-infecting Noroviruses belong to genogroups I and II (especially genotype 4). Norovirus is environmentally stable and resistant to disinfectants such as alcohols and detergents. Culturing Norovirus in vitro is difficult, making identification by conventional microbiological assays challenging.
