Target Information
CBS is the only known pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme that contains heme. It serves as an important regulator of hydrogen sulfide, particularly in the brain, utilizing cysteine instead of serine to catalyze hydrogen sulfide formation. Hydrogen sulfide functions as a gasotransmitter with signaling and cytoprotective effects, including acting as a neuromodulator in the brain to protect neurons against hypoxic injury.
