BBS2 유전자는 Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) 유전자 패밀리에 속합니다. Bardet-Biedl 증후군은 색소성 망막병증, 비만, 다지증, 신장 기형 및 정신 지체를 특징으로 하는 상염색체 열성 질환입니다.
BBS 단백질은 섬모 형성과 기능에 관여하며, 세포의 기저체, 섬모 축사 및 중심체 주변 영역에 위치합니다. 또한 미세소관 관련 수송을 통한 세포 내 수송에도 관여할 수 있습니다.
이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 여섯 개의 다른 BBS 단백질과 함께 다단백질 복합체인 BBSome을 형성합니다.
