Target Information
Childhood and adult obesity have increased dramatically worldwide over the past decade, driven by both environmental and genetic factors. The potassium channel KCTD15 gene has been identified as a locus associated with higher body mass index (BMI) in humans, along with GNPDA2, MTCH2, FTO, and TMEM18.
Further studies on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in diabetic and non-diabetic patients showed FTO as most strongly associated with obesity, while MTCH2 and GNPDA2 also showed significant associations with elevated BMI.
At least two isoforms of KCTD15 are known to exist.
