Target Information
This gene encodes the large subunit of DNA damage-binding protein, a heterodimer composed of large and small subunits. The protein functions in nucleotide-excision repair, and defective activity causes the repair defect observed in patients with xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group E (XPE). Mutation analysis is required to determine whether the defect in XPE patients is in this gene or in the gene encoding the small subunit. Additionally, Best vitelliform macular dystrophy is mapped to the same region (11q) as this gene, but no sequence alterations have been demonstrated in Best disease patients.
